Sefton Council’s Bereavement Services team has been officially recognised for excellence in public service delivery, having been named a finalist at the prestigious APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Cemeteries and Crematoria Service Awards 2025.

Outstanding service

The award, presented at the APSE Cemeteries and Crematoria Seminar on Thursday 1st May at the National Memorial Arboretum in Burton-on-Trent, acknowledged outstanding service delivery and innovation across bereavement services nationally.

Sefton’s entry, which focused on the service’s innovative partnership work with North West Cancer Research, received strong praise from peers and sector leaders.

The submission centred around the creation and installation of a unique Memorial Tree at Thornton Crematorium Garden of Rest.

Lasting tribute

A poignant and lasting tribute supporting families affected by cancer, while also promoting health awareness and remembrance.

Representing Sefton at the event, Angela Coates, Assistant Manager of Bereavement Services received the certificate during the award ceremony.

Cllr Peter Harvey, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, said:
“To be named a finalist in such a competitive category is a real testament to the professionalism, compassion, and commitment of our Bereavement Services team.

“Their partnership with Northwest Cancer Research, and the creation of the Memorial Tree at Thornton Crematorium, is a powerful example of how public services can make a lasting and meaningful impact in our communities. We’re extremely proud of this recognition and the dedicated work behind it.”
